The History Behind the Wonder

The meaning of Machu Picchu translated from Quechua is Old Mountain and definitely its name makes its justice.

Historians have come to an agreement that the citadel was built on the reign of Inca Pachacutec around the 15th century. Of course, Pachacutec was probably the most important Inca since it is attributed to him the construction of many important complex and also the great Inca expansion.


The Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is well visibly divided in two sectors the agricultural that has beautiful terraces and the village full of enclosures made of rectangular stone constructions signature of the Incas with windows looking into the valley.

Something that is worth mentioning is the sync with nature that the whole citadel seems to have like the Condor shape that can be seen from above.


Since it was discovered in 1911 when the archeologist Hiram Bingham walk towards the Humid Forest and found the lost Inca city the one vaguely mentioned by the Peruvian chroniclers has not ceased to amaze and collect recognitions and tittle all over the world.


On 1983, probably the second most important title Machu Picchu have ever been given was to be declared Cultural and Natural World Heritage by the UNESCO. These was fundamental to obtain the guidelines to preserve the citadel for the future generations.

Since the New Open World Corporation release an online open voting to choose the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World on 2007, people from all around the world got very excited and Peruvians were not an exception.

On July 7th, the results of more than 100 million of votes were showed on a beautiful ceremony that took place in Lisbon, Portugal and for the contentment of many Machu Picchu was selected.

Machu Picchu is also Nature

Even though, the citadel of Machu Picchu is worldwide recognized for its cultural heritage it has an important natural side that should be also highlighted.

Machu Picchu town is located in the Vilcanota Valley between the two beautiful mountains of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu, and its surrounded by the mighty Urubamba river, geographically an exceptional location. 


The whole area shelters a significant amount of flora and fauna for instance 3250 different species of plants which includes 423 orchid varieties, 443 bird species, 77 mammals, 26 reptiles, 377 butterflies, etc. this information was taken from the SERNAMP Peruvian entity in charge to protect natural areas.


Machu Picchu Entrance

As one of the Seven Wonder, to enter Machu Picchu it must be paid an admission fee regulated by the Cultural Ministry of Peru. On the effort of protecting Machu Picchu and the big masses that visited the citadel daily, the ministry re-organized the admission fees in three types and groups with specific timing.


Solo Machu Picchu Admission Fee (3 groups)

  • – 1st Group: Entrance at 6 am, 7 am and 8 am
  • – 2 Group: Entrance at 9 am, 10 am and 11 am
  • – 3 Group: Entrance at 12 pm, 1 pm and 2 pm

Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu Mountain Admission Fee (3 groups)

  • – 1st Group: Entrance to Machu Picchu from 6 am and entrance to Huayna Picchu from 7 am to 8 am.
  • – 2 Group: Entrance to Machu Picchu from 7 am and entrance to Huayna Picchu from 7 am to 8 am.
  • – 3 Group: Entrance to Machu Picchu from 8 am and entrance to Huayna Picchu from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

*If you wish to hike the Huayna Picchu Mountain take into consideration that these tickets sold out easily, so book your tickets far in advance.
