Peruvian Pride: The publication highlights its award-winning restaurants

The renowned National Geographic portal included Lima in a recent list recommending the 30 most impressive destinations to visit in the year 2024, reported PromPerú. In Nat Geo’s most recent publication, The Cool List 2024, read in much of the world, it is explained that Peru’s capital city stands out for its gastronomy, the best restaurants in the world and accessibility for travel. “It was the only city with two places in the top 10 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards,” recalls the publication, which highlights the presence of two important restaurants located in the capital, Central and Maido, awarded first and sixth place among the best in the world, respectively.

What else?

“The Cool List 2024” indicates that the Peruvian capital stands out for its gastronomy, world renowned restaurants, and accessibility for travelers.

“It was the only city with two spots in the top 10 of the most recent World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards,” the publication reads.

Moreover, the article mentions two important restaurants located in the capital city, one of them Central —by chefs Virgilio Martinez and Pia Leon— named the best restaurant in the world and “regarded by many as having placed Lima on the global food map,” for its innovative focus on indigenous ingredients. Likewise, the publication highlights the presence of Maido in Lima. Run by chef Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura, Maido ranks sixth in the top 10 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, and its heritage comes from the Peruvian-Japanese fusion, also known as Nikkei.

Likewise, the list highlights the experiences that Lima’s districts of Miraflores and Barranco provide for residents and foreigners.

“Away from Michelin-starred restaurants, rooftop bars have fast become the hangout of choice for Limeños,” reads the article.

Finally, Lima has been recognized for its accessibility for visitors, who can flow into the Peruvian capital via different airlines, PromPeru indicated. “Our capital has endless experiences for visitors, including gastronomic, historical, and cultural ones. You just need to travel around the city to learn more about our heritage and tradition,” it stated.

Is it important to include gastronomy in our visits?

Gastronomy is a part of culture; it shows the traditions and values of nations. Tourists get to know the cuisines of different countries while travelling. Sometimes gastronomy plays the decisive role in making a decision about travelling.

Peruvian cuisine reflects local practices and ingredients including influences mainly from the indigenous population, including the Inca, and cuisines brought by immigrants from Europe (Spanish cuisine, Italian cuisine), Asia (Chinese cuisine and Japanese cuisine), and Africa (Maghrebi cuisine and West African cuisine)

Food tourism in Peru is big business. In 2019 Peru was named the world’s leading culinary destination for the 8th year running. The UN World Tourism Organization says that over 40% of visitors to the country are there to experience the food as their first priority. With attractions like Machu Picchu, soaring mountain ranges, tropical jungle, and surf beaches, as ‘competition’, food tourism has made huge progress in Peru.

Gastronomy experiences are considered to be a way of participating in another culture through trying new recipes and ingredients, meeting locals, and visiting places with strong culinary identities

Peru features prominently in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants every year and almost all of these restaurants are located in Lima. On the 50 Best Latin American Restaurants list, positions 1, 2, and 7 are occupied by Lima eateries. Why does Lima have that makes it such a special culinary destination? The essential gastronomic experience that is Lima, the capital of Peru, is based upon centuries of immigration from countries with important culinary heritages (Spain, China, Japan), incredible indigenous foods unique to this country, and a booming economy.

And, what is the gastronomic experience?

It is to go from place to place, from market to market, from restaurant to restaurant, visiting the “Huariques” (not famous places that offer wonders).  And in each place, you will enjoy different delicacies.

There are many culinary experiences in Peru. Especially in Lima they are very well developed.  You can have experiences in the local markets themselves.  On route visiting some touristic places; experiences in different restaurants.  Wherever you eat in Peru, it will always be one of the best experiences of your life.
